April is Outdoor Heritage Month in the Alleghenies. The amazing variety of events taking place this April will kick-off a full year of conservation, recreation, and stewardship opportunities! There are events and activities for every interest and opportunities for everyone to get involved. If you belong to a group that has a public event within the Alleghenies, we want to help you publicize it.

March 2010

March 4: Yough Middle School Science Fair and Outdoor Evening, Free and open to the public
March 6: PA Song Bird Teacher Workshops. Two-day hands-on workshop is designed to develop an enthusiasm for teaching ecology concepts through songbirds. Pre-registration required.
March 12-13: Washington County Ag Days, Friday 1-4pm; Saturday 1-8pm; Free. Join us for two great days of fun, farming, contests, and more!
March 12-13: Pennsylvania Association of Environmental Educators Conference in Blue Bell. A Sense of Place: Our Outdoor Heritage Delight in Discovery will feature sessions that embrace the process of discovery, inquiry learning, hands-on activities, and instructional strategies that optimize learner engagement.
March 13: Wildlife Day at the Community Arts Center in Westmont; 10-2; Free and open to the public.
March 20: Mountain Laurel Trout Unlimited Banquet at the Holiday Inn in downtown Johnstown– Doors open at 5:00, Dinner at 6:30 – Tickets are $30/person. This event serves as their primary fundraiser for the year. There will be prizes, awards, and raffles.
March 20: 7th Annual Family Fun Fest at the Indiana Mall; 10-3. Theme: Spring F.L.I.N.G. Fitness, Laughter, Invention, Nature, Go Green; Free and open to the public.
March 20: Dunnings Creek Wetlands Invasive Plant Removal, help control the garlic mustard infestation!
March 27: Earth Hour 2010. Join millions of people across the globe, and turn off your lights for one hour, starting at 8:30pm.

April 2010

April 2: Outdoor Heritage Month Opening Ceremony, Johnstown Area Heritage Association, 10am
April 2: Geek Art/Green Innovators Festival GA/GI, 5pm to 11pm during the Penn Avenue Art Crawl in Pittsburgh
April 3: Paint Creek Watershed Clean-up. Meet at Windber Recreational Park, 10am-1pm.
April 3: Boating Safety Course, 8:30-5:00; Prince Gallitzin State Park. $15.00; 8 hour boating safety course sponsored by the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. Bring your own lunch. Pre-registration required.
April 8: Food, Inc., Movie Screening.
April 9: Nature Story Time. at the WPNR
April 10: Trash to Treasure 9am-4pm.
April 11 – 17: National Volunteer Week   and National Environmental Education Week 
April 16: Nature Story Time at the WPNR
April 17: Beatty Road Clean-Up, at the Saint Vincent Gristmill. 9am-Noon.
April 17: National Park Service workshop at JAHA Heritage Discovery Center; 11-12:30pm; Puppet plays, music, and crafts celebrating the regions environmental and historic heritage. Participants in grades K-2 will receive NPS badges and certificates. Call 814 539-1889 for more information.
April 17: Gear Swap and E-Cycling, Noon to 4pm, Wilderness Voyageurs, Ohiopyle, PA. Clean out those closets! Get rid of that old gear and maybe get some new goodies! In addition, JVS Environmental will be holding an electronic pick-up for proper recycling.

April 24: The Environmental Learning Network will host an Earth Day Celebration. 10am-2pm at Shawnee State Park, Pavilion 3.
April 24: Westmoreland Earth Day at Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve; 10-4; Free and open to the public
April 24: Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site April 24th at 2 PM. Pennsylvania and the Nature Discovery Treasure Chest. This presentation is free but space is limited. Please call in advance for reservations -814-886-6150.

May 6 – 7: Outdoor Adventures
May 7 – 8: Eco Home & Garden Festival Sustainability-focused garden festival merging gardeners and the eco-conscious hosted by Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Garden
May 8: Bloody RUN Canoe Classic, A 5 and 9 mile race down the Raystown Branch of the Juniata River. Both Canoes and Kayaks welcome.
May 8: Stonycreek Cleanup sponsored by the
Benscreek Canoe Club
May 11-12: PA GIS Conference, 9:00-3:00 at the Pasquerilla Center at UPJ. Presenters will showcase applications that help advance environmental, economic, and social sustainability. Pre-registration required.
May 14 – 16: Stonycreek Rendezvous
May 22: Native Plant Fest of the Allegheny Mountains featuring a native plant sale, workshops, and a lecture by Doug Tallamy, Johnstown Area Heritage Association
May 14 – 23: Great Outdoors Week
May 21: National Bike to Work Day
May 28: Full Moon Paddle on the Quemahoning Resevoir Somerset County
May 30: Climate Change Forum, at UPJ 10-3.

June 26: Quemahoning Classic Fishing Tournament sponsored by SCRIP; 7-Noon. Registration required. Minimal fee requested. Prizes awarded. Volunteers to serve as judges needed.
