Each April, we renew our commitment to celebrating the rich natural and cultural heritage of Pennsylvania’s Allegheny Mountains with Outdoor Heritage Month - 30 days that include National Environmental Education Week, Earth Day, Arbor Day, National Parks Week and Global & National Youth Service Days. Activities during the month range from a green economy lecture series to a whitewater-paddling festival called the Stonycreek Rendezvous.
The culminating event is Outdoor Adventures, featuring two days of hands-on learning activities for elementary students at Quemahoning Lake. May 6-7, 2010, at scenic Quemahoning Lake in northern Somerset County, natural and cultural organizations will gather to present Outdoor Adventures. Over two days, 1,200 elementary students will experience the natural world in a personal way. They’ll learn about our forests, waterways and wildlife by seeing, touching, and hearing about them from people who are passionate about their interests. This event is free of charge to the students, participating school districts and homeschooling parents. But Outdoor Adventures is not free of cost. This important educational event is possible only through the commitment of sponsoring organizations and donations.
